Sura stood on the dais, looking up at the fireworks. The portrait of elegance and beauty in her red gown, the layered chiffon. and lace looking like glittering flames. Her fine dark hair curled and held back with jeweled clips. She looked like a princess or a fiery elemental made flesh. Her first Yule ball for the family organization. A yearly gathering of the Coven and all its allies to pay tribute to one another and vow loyalty to the young Heiress. Now she understood why her mother loathed these events. But it was tradition for the Belmont Helsing clan, and as the only living members of the bloodline, Sura could not avoid attending. With her mother serving as a Goddess, it left these trivial witch traditions to Sura. She loved her family. Loved her coven and all that they stood for. But as she watched the fireworks alone and listened to the orchestra playing for the guests, she only felt......alone. Isolated. She was born into a world of privilege and beauty. Elegant parties and high class guests. A royal in a modern world that held little understanding of what it meant. What duties had to be upheld. The precautions and trivial nuances that could make or break a clan like theirs.
But Sura was also still just a young girl. Barely out of high school and already mocked for who she was. God forbid her schoolmates ever knee what she truly was, then she'd never hear the end of it. And while she was proud, she knew all too well how one must behave among mortals. Discretion and secrecy were key. Mortals would go into a frenzy if they knew what walked among them. At least here among the Belmont-Helsing guests, she did not have to hide herself. Not completely. This was a place she should feel at peace....but she only felt shy and insecure under all the attention from those who wished to carry her favor and all the privileges that came with it. Her mother had warned her that there were many who would want to align themselves with her, to further their own power or status. A political game....hell some elders had even tried throwing their own children or grandchildren at her in offer of an arranged marriage.
But Sura wanted love. Not a political deal or an arranged marriage. At the moment, all Sura really wanted was to go home to her bayou. At least at home, she didn't feel so out of place and awkward. She sighed as she sat down on her throne, her emotions hidden from her expression save for the loneliness in her eyes as she watched everyone dance
