A talented Spartan, Dalikas was different from the others of his culture. He valued philosophy and during the reign of the tyrants in Athens, he was sent as a body guard and learned from Socrates how to think and philosophize.
Of course, most of the time, he′d listen, but there are unrecorded instances of him disagreeing with the scribes of Plato and Xenophon due to Athenians not wanting to admit that the Spartans had any capacity of reason.
He learned lessons from the Peloponnese War from Socrates and the Athenian generals. Later, he ended up in the 10,000 expedition to Persia where he lead the rear guard on the way back to Greece and formed later writing a Taktika and Strategos as well as many anonymous essays on philosophy and warfare.
