Leia tossed her bag
down into the grass, moving to sit on the massive smooth bolder that
broke apart the lines of trees here on the cliff. She liked the spot,
it was bright on the side of the horizon, dark to her back were the
forest swept out behind her and made her feel like she was the only
person in the world. Leaning down she pulled the strap of the
messenger bag up towards her, so the leather slid over the stone, the
only sound besides the faint twitter of birds from somewhere behind
her. It was strange to be able to hear them, the voices that broke
from the sound others hear to their actual meanings. When Leia had
first started to understand the barks and growls of other animals It
had frightened her. But her grandfather had made sure she had no fear
of animals, helping her to understand her mothers abilities which had
helped Leia immeasurably when it came time she started to answer the
barks and hisses with her own words. She had cried the first time,
sure she was losing her mind, but she didnt let that stop her from
trying to learn all she could. First she studied mental disorders,
sure she was insane and unwilling to tell anyone else she had lost
her mind. But then she came across a word that made everything make
sense for her.
Zoolingualism, thats
what it was, this strange thing she could do. Her mind was special
all right, in that it could pull the words from the sounds animals
made around her. The random bursts of consciousness were strange, and
new but fascinated her now she knew she wasnt insane. It was how she
found this bolder on the edge of the world. A place to test her
abilities, and study all of the books she found that even hinted at
people who could do what she did. She never broached the subject with
anyone, she wanted to know all she could before she could even think
of telling others what she could do. So now, she sat on her bolder,
the seat smooth with her usage over time. Her belly was full of the
pancakes she had been plied with by her father, so she felt happy,
contented as she pulled free yet another book. She worked her fingers
through the pages till she found where she had left off, letting the
buzz of the words coming from the birds songs fade away so she only
heard the music of it as she started to read. She might not be able
to do some of the more impressive things of her family, but she would
be sure to do this one thing perfectly. Her confident smile never
faltered as she started another day of secular study into her gift.
