King Ezekiel, portrayed by Khary Payton, is the leader of a community known as the Kingdom. A former actor and zookeeper, Ezekiel created his persona as a king alongside a pet Bengal tiger he rescued from the zoo, Shiva . When Carol is taken to the Kingdom, she and Ezekiel form a tentative friendship. When the Saviors escalate their harassment of the Kingdom, Ezekiel begins to realize that their relatively peaceful lifestyle cannot continue and accepts the invitations of Jesus, Morgan, and Rick to band together and fight the Saviors. He maintains his kingly persona as he leads his troops into the battle where they kill a large number of Saviors and believe themselves to be victorious. Not long afterward, they come into the line of fire of Savior snipers who kill all of Ezekiel's fighters except for Jerry and Carol and wound Ezekiel himself. As they try to escape the compound, Shiva finds them threatened by walkers and sacrifices herself to save Ezekiel. Only then does his facade break down. When he returns to the Kingdom, devastated, he retreats to his rooms and will see no one. He only reappears when the Saviors come to remove everyone from the Sanctuary, sacrificing himself as a distraction so his people could escape and padlocking the gates so the Saviors could not overrun their home.
