Rick Grimes, portrayed by Andrew Lincoln, is a former sheriff's deputy from a small Georgia town. He is often described as an everyman — smart, calm, just, and a good friend, husband and father, but with his own set of flaws. Rick is a natural leader even when he might doubt himself, but these doubts contribute to the ups and downs his character experiences throughout the series. His overwhelming need to do the right thing and protect those who can't protect themselves may pull him away from his family, causing tension within his marriage with Lori and his relationship with his son, Carl. Acting as a sheriff's deputy, Rick was shot in the line of duty shortly before the events of the apocalypse began. He finds himself waking up from a coma to a deserted hospital, unbelievable carnage, and his family home deserted. He eventually makes his way to Atlanta and then to the survivors' camp where his family is taking shelter, and quickly becomes the leader of those survivors. In his quest to lead them to safety, his son Carl is shot in a hunting accident, which brings the group to the Greene farm. While he is still optimistic about the general goodwill of other survivors when the group arrives at the farm, he is shaken by the circumstances which force them to leave, becoming a much darker, warier version of himself. Focused on protecting his family, he leads the group to the prison and clears it for occupation. While there are threats and incidents at the prison, including the death of Rick's wife Lori and the delusions Rick's grief causes, Rick and his group transform it into a relatively safe and productive community until they are forced out permanently by the Governor and his forces. Rick subsequently travels with Carl, not knowing if the other survivors, including his daughter Judith, are alive or dead. After almost being killed for meat by the cannibalistic inhabitants of Terminus, Rick's group is reunited and begins to travel toward Washington, D.C. Rick and his group are on the verge of starvation when they are invited to join the Alexandria Safe Zone, and Rick becomes the leader there following the death of Deanna Monroe. Just as he has begun to regain hope for a future for his friends and children, he and the Alexandrians are thrown into a lethal conflict with the Saviors. After losing two of his closest allies, Rick is at his lowest, but eventually accepts his responsibility to work with his new allies and make a plan to bring down the Saviors. During the war against the saviors, Rick's emotions return to destabilize after the loss of his legitimate son Carl Grimes.
