An officer who graduated west point in 1860, he joined the war effort of the Civil War, and mastering the art of war and knowledge of Clausewitz,Jomini and even earlier writers of war, he made a name for himself in the indian Wars and the wars against Spain later in life. His major hero being John Churchill, a British general.
