Due to her biological grandfather’s mutated DNA, Kendra grew exceptionally quick within her mother’s womb; just like Rose had within Annika’s. Kendra was brash and angry even while within her mother’s womb. While Rose was pregnant with Kendra, she was in a battle to the death with Magneto - only one of them would be allowed to survive. With Rose nearing her defeat, Kendra awoke inside and her surge of anger flowed through her mother, unlocking the deepest recesses of Rose’s mind and unleashing a terrible evil that had been biding its time to come out. This extra surge of anger, & power, caused Rose to lose control of her powers. Due to the loss of control, Rose defeated Magneto, burning him alive but the repercussions were grave. The extra power from Kendra’s unborn mind not only killed Magneto but nearly killed Rose, as well as the unborn Kendra. Rose was carried back to the X-Men’s medical facilities by the Doctor, Kendra’s father, and there Rose received the proper treatment and on June 17, 2007, Kendra Lee Kotay was born. Due to the strange mutated DNA Kendra grew fast; within a matter of weeks she was fully matured. Despite never having a real childhood, Kendra proved herself to be of exceptional skill. Her mental capacity for learning was beyond that of a typical child; by the time she was a year old, she was able to speak 3 languages, pilot a shuttlecraft, tend to engineering details on her adopted grandfather’s vessel. She stayed in the 24th century, on the very same starship that her mother had however, it was upon her return to the 21st century where Kendra learned the most, planted her roots and decided it was home.

Upon her return to the 21st century, she was enrolled in Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters (otherwise known as the Xavier Institute & the X-Mansion). There she took classes with Professor McCoy, Ororo Munroe and even Jean Grey. She trained in her powers with Logan Howlett, as they had similar abilities; the X-Men became part of an extended family to Kendra, just as they had to Rose. Kendra may have been bright in most areas but, there were many areas where she was just like an average person, for instance relationships. Kendra had many failed relationships both friendly and romantically, she would wind up alone, consistently teased by the other students for her heritage and altogether shunned; due to this, she was a loner and began to resent the other students. She found solace however, in her studies and training, finding them to be a good release for her anger. Seeing this, a few students went out of their way to befriend her - Bobby Drake, Anna Marie & Kitty Pryde, however while friendly towards them, she didn’t allow the friendships to flourish and instead pulled deeper within her shell and away from the people who cared.

Her luck changed one day when she was having class outside; Professor McCoy had taken the class off of school grounds, to teach them philosophy, when the Brotherhood attacked. Most of the more well-trained students stood ground with their Professor, regardless of his orders to run, and Kendra was one of those students. Using her powers, Kendra manifested a Bo staff into her hands and began to fight against a white skinned, dark haired, red-eyed man who was also using a Bo staff. Shortly, the Brotherhood members retreated and the students began to tend to their wounded. As Kendra helped with the wounded, she noticed the red-eyed man limping and was instantly drawn to him - not many people were able to put up the type of fight he had, and she found it exhilarating. Walking up to the limping red-eyed man, she offered her services but he refused and disappeared from her sight. Kendra would often wonder about this mysterious man. The way she fought to protect the other students and the Professor caused the X-Men to bring her into the team. It wasn’t long until she met him again, through her mother; it was her mother’s way of trying to play matchmaker and help two lonely souls get together. They struck up an instant friendship, both drawn to each other but, neither of them admitting they were falling for each other. Gambit hung around as Kendra went through many romantic entanglements, that led nowhere. One day, the two went to a secret spot that Gambit had showed her, a spot that had become their place to get away from it all; Kendra admitted she had enough with romance and had decided to give up on it; that she was jealous of the relationship her parents had. Gambit told her not to give up, and it was there that two hearts opened up to each other - the start of the romantic relationship between Remy LeBeau and Kendra Kotay.

Shortly thereafter the unlocked recesses of Rose’s mind (the ones Kendra unlocked while she was in the womb) began to take hold fully and her mother started to go crazy. No one saw it at first, not even Kendra as she was too focused on studies, training and Remy. One night, while she was in her room, Kendra heard the sounds of something horrible happening outside; throwing on her robe, Kendra fled the mansion and found the source of the commotion, and her run came to a screeching halt as she saw her father stab her mother, effectively killing her. The shock and horror of seeing something that gruesome caused Kendra to flee to the man she knew she could trust - Gambit. Unable to cope with the tragedy, she stayed with Gambit at his home in the woods for a few weeks, unaware that her mother had been resurrected, her father had gone crazy and been put back together, and that Annika, Chakotay, Tom and Tuvok had disappeared. When she did go back to the Institute she was greeted with all the stories of what had happened while she was gone. Furious, she confronted her father about what she had seen and he told her he had no idea what she was talking about; this began the resentment toward her mother.

Shortly after her grandmother was rescued, she heard about her grandfather’s death. Not long after her grandmother gave birth to her uncle, Jayson Neil Kotay, Annika was kidnapped. Rose managed to find where her mother was held and gathered a team, made up a few of her fellow X-Men, to rescue her; they found Annika nearly dead after Dr. Malicious had been using his technology to extract the Borg nanoprobes from Annika’s bloodstream. When Annika was better, she went on a mission for Starfleet, disappeared and, eventually, was presumed dead. Kendra went to the funerals but never wept for her lost family and friends, instead, unable to cope being at the Institute any longer, she left the school, and the X-Men, and moved in with Gambit permanently. A deeper resentment for her mother began to boil under the surface and she secretly, and unfairly, blamed Rose for all the trouble. Through it all Gambit stayed by her side and the two grew even closer, a deeper connection forming between the lovers. On the spur of the moment, and to cheer Kendra up, Gambit took her back to their secret spot where he proposed to her - Kendra accepted but the happiness was short lived.

Their first attempt at getting married was a disaster, Gambit never showed up, leaving Kendra standing there in her wedding gown looking like a fool. In her despair, she had told everyone to go home and sat crying in the reception hall; there she was attacked by a man, who went by the name Wentworth; a minor fight ensued and Kendra had some of her life force pulled out of her. She was found by Malak on the ground and made her way to the mansion. As she pulled up, in her torn wedding gown, she saw Quatre and Remy on the front porch - he had missed the wedding after being attacked by Death. Kendra used her accelerated healing and, through the use of some scientific tricks Hank came up with, passed it over to Remy, healing his wounds but weakening herself in the process. Even in his weakened state, he still wanted to go after the being, nicknamed Death, and destroy it. Kendra pleaded with him to let her help, but he wouldn’t have it, so Kendra did the next best thing – she asked Quatre to bring him back to her. Kendra didn’t see Remy for over two whole months-

Kendra had no idea what had happened to him during those long, arduous months so she left the house and went on a road trip of her own, where she met a friendly vampire named Lucifer; the two struck up a quick friendship. However, she left and went back home as Christmas rolled around; she hung around inside the mansion, wishing for a Christmas miracle. Shortly after, Remy returned, weak and injured; the two reunited, Kendra’s miracle was answered. Their reunion lasted for a few months, then Gambit had to leave for the weekend, which didn’t bother Kendra and she saw her love off. The last day he was gone, Kendra had started doing some remodeling to the cabin in the woods and left to get some supplies, when she returned she noticed a few things were off. Thinking that Gambit came home early she hurried inside and was ambushed by Magneto, Pyro and Mystique. That ambush ended with Kendra forcibly being injected with the Mutant Cure, beaten and left nearly dead, as a warning to Gambit and the X-Men. When Gambit returned home that evening, he found his love unconscious in the hallway and took her to the X-Men for treatment. When she began to recover, Kendra told Gambit exactly what had happened and that Magneto had mentioned Rose by name. Gambit left Kendra in the care of the X-Men and went in immediate search of Rose, unaware that Rose had been Magneto’s first victim and had already been found by another X-Man, Firecracker. Gambit talked to Rose and found she also had been given the Mutant Cure and that Jayson had been kidnapped by Magneto - seemingly never to be seen again.

A few months after everyone recovered, Kendra went with Remy to Hawaii where they eloped (a few friends were there to watch and celebrate with them); neither of them told many people where they were going. Right after saying, ‘I do,’ they were attacked by Vlad, a demon who had a vendetta against Kendra’s new husband. By this time Kendra had already gone through one regeneration, which Remy’s nemesis didn’t know about, and to pay him back for killing his bride, Vlad planned on doing the same to Kendra. A skeleton army was summoned, keeping everyone separated from each other. Kendra watched out for Katrina (the human girlfriend of Beo's) and when she became worried about her, she called out to Beo, who came and took Katrina away from the fight. The fight continued, Remy and Kendra were separated from each other, neither able to get to the other and Kendra watched as he was flung into the ocean. When she tried to run to him, she was caught by some of the skeleton army and held in place. Unable to get to her new husband, she called Beo who returned and rescued the unconscious Gambit out of the water. Vlad’s laugh, a laugh she’ll never forget for as long as she’ll live, echoed around her as he plunged a knife deep into one of her hearts. At the same time, Beo turned around and screamed as he saw her get stabbed. Kendra muttered Gambit’s name as her body hit the sandy beach; her hands wrapping around the dagger and pulling it out of her, as Beo rushed to her side, laying Gambit in the sand beside them. A visage of her grandfather appeared before her eyes, in her mind, then that one heart stopped beating, her other was unable to handle the stress of her damage and stopped also – she was dead.

Gambit awoke, confused about what had happened but, when he saw Kendra dead and bleeding in the sand, everything came back to him. Knowing she would regenerate, he stayed away from her body, then a bright, golden light emitted from her and when it vanished she had changed; the same person just a different body. Kendra remembered everything, even if her personality was slightly different. The two went back to their hotel room, while Beo went to tell Katrina what had happened. In the hotel room, Kendra pressed Remy about who Vlad was and what Gambit had actually done. After he explained everything, in eerily vivid detail, they went to bed. When she awoke, she left a note for him, got dressed and went in search of Vlad, finding him hidden inside a volcano cave. A fight ensued and she lost, again, but instead of being killed he cast a spell and her body was inhabited by that of his long lost love, Nikhol. Possessed, Nikhol/Kendra went back to the hotel to find a very worried Gambit; having all of Kendra’s memories, and feeling her struggling within the mind to escape for just a moment, she conned the conman. After gaining Gambit’s trust, she tricked him; more like lured him, into a false sense of security. Eventually Nikhol messed up and Gambit realized what had happened to Kendra, but before he could get to her, Nikhol fled without a trace and he went back to North Salem – alone.

Over the next few months, Nikhol gained more control over Kendra’s body, learning her powers and using them lustfully, wanting more. Nikhol, unaware of what was happening back at the mansion, between Gambit and Kendra’s mother, went to Vlad to capture and kill Gambit but, it was them who walked into the trap this time, just outside North Salem. A battle occurred and Nikhol was magically driven out of Kendra’s body, once Gambit killed Vlad once and for all. Back to her normal self, Gambit told Kendra it was over and it wasn’t her fault; that he just had to go off on his own to think. Her pleas fell on deaf ears as Gambit brushed her off and left her, supposedly because being with him was too dangerous. When Kendra returned home, she found that Professor Xavier and Scott Summers were both killed and she went to battle against Magneto and his Brotherhood. During this battle she fought mostly on the sidelines, but she attacked Magneto, furious about the torture he’d put her family and friends through.

All the anger, the rage, that had built up inside of Kendra, she was finally able to unleash on the one person she despised the most – the man who was responsible for ‘curing’ her all that time ago. He had attacked her in her home and left her for dead, if it hadn’t been for Gambit – the man she had married only for him to leave her. How could he do that to her?! Kendra ran at Magneto, manifesting a Bo staff; she hadn’t thought about his control over metal and was more surprised when the metal staff flew out of her hands and wrapped itself around her. She landed on the ground with a hard thud, the scratches and cuts healing nearly instantaneously as the metal staff tightened its hold. She could feel it crushing and squeezing her organs and bones, holding back a scream of pain. Logan’s deafening roar was heard nearby as he saw his protégé being tortured and he, in spite of the danger to himself, went to save her. Kendra saw Logan get lifted into the air, the adamantium being pulled every which direction. She tried to use her strength to break out of the metal pole, but it was consistently squeezing tighter. She watched as Magneto withdrew Logan’s claws and aimed them at her chest; both parties gazing at each other in fear. In the next instant Logan was flying at her and his claws went through her chest, into her hearts and one of her lungs; Kendra’s eyes went wide, her mouth dropped open as Logan screamed. Neither was able to move, then Magneto ripped Logan away from her, dropping them both to the ground and releasing them from his powers.

Logan scrambled to her side, ripping the Bo staff from around her body and held the bleeding young woman in his arms. Blood began to dribble out of her mouth as she tried to speak; her eyes grew dimmer, glazing over as pain slowly started to subside, mere squeaks coming from her open mouth as she took her final breath in her trainer’s arms. When she was dead, Logan roared ferociously and held her body to his. Not knowing she would regenerate into a new form, he buried his protégé; it was there Kendra regenerated and awoke. In a panic she broke the casket and clawed her way out of the damp earth; disoriented and confused Kendra fled. Over the next few months, she fell into even more despair. She had left the X-Men long before this, so when she heard they had disbanded, she barely blinked an eye. She moved into an apartment of her own, still choosing to live in North Salem. She filed for a legal divorce from Gambit and, instead of taking her maiden name back, she took that of her father’s alias – Smith. After all, she had always been closer to her father than her mother, so it seemed to make sense; she just had no clue if he would ever find out. Having a new last name meant that she could keep herself hidden easier, or at least she hoped.

It was during this time alone, that she had caught a newscast on television; the newscaster was talking about Lex Luthor (once a family friend, turned enemy) and a fire that had broken out as one of his hidden facilities owned by LexCorp, also she saw live images from the scene, watching as Superman lifted up her mother and disappeared. Well, she didn't have to be a brainiac to know what had happened - Lex had pissed her mother off. She switched off the TV and rode her Harley to Metropolis, as fast as she possibly could. Once in Metropolis General, she had it out with Mercy, then advanced on the injured, but rapidly healing, Lex. He, of course, didn't recognize her - at first. It was there, in that hospital room, that she made a deal with the devil - a deal that would nearly cost her, her life.

They had planned it perfectly. They crashed her parents' wedding, only to find her father had stood Rose up. The thought that her father had come to his senses, pleased the young brunette however, it was seeing her husband there that set her mind aflame. Sure, he hadn't known it was her until - until her mother had fallen from the precipice. She had shouted 'mother,' while within earshot of Remy, who then knew who she was. But, before he could make his way to her, Lex scooped her up and they fled the scene. They arrived at the Kent Farm, outside the barn, in time to see Clark and Rose kissing. Fury consumed her as she went directly to the barn and p the stairs. Lex dealt with Clark, while she took care of her mother; Rose wouldn't fight her, which was just fine. With the two of them working together, Lex and Kendra captured Clark and Rose, and took them to another of Lex's facilities.

Three weeks later, Kendra had realized that Superman had gone missing. Between her father's note, Clark's capture and Superman going AWOL, she began to put the pieces together. Upon seeing the torture Clark and Rose were enduring, she fled to a bar, to gather her thoughts. While there, the bartender called her La Tourmente L'ame...The Tormented Soul. After chatting with him for a while, she realized she still had an opportunity to correct her wrongs. She went back to the facility; she snuck into Clark's Kryptonite lined cell and asked him, flat out if he was Superman (having explained her thoughts as to why). Right as he nodded, Lex interrupted them - she wouldn't be able to save them right then. Heading to his office, she told Lex she couldn't work for him anymore but, knowing it would happen, he offered her one last job - to capture a man who was killing mutant women. He knew she'd never be able to turn it down, and he had been right.

Traveling to Raleigh, North Carolina, she began to research the cases of the women killed by the Mutant Killer. Her manhunt would come to her door, however, when the killer's power negating colleague attacked. Having been watching, Remy came to her aid the moment she called him. In the end, their reunion was shortlived; they were attacked again and they lost. With Remy mortally wounded, after having been stabbed by a scalpel, Kendra stopped fighting to be by his side. Her tears fell upon him but she was paralyzed and taken away before they could heal his wounds.

Remy went in search of his wife, at the tauntings of the killer himself. However, by the time he got there, she had already managed to escape her bonds only to wind up in a creepy game of sorts - she had to survive each trial, while not having the use of her powers. If she failed, she would die like his other victims. On the outside, Remy worked on a way to free her, while fighting off the killer's thugs. On the inside, Kendra managed to make her way through the unwinnable game with her brains, natural athleticism and agility.
