Temp'elar Family Event: An anniversary gift from Calcifer to Mizzy.
The Joy of Love
7th of December:
Cal stood looking down to the file in his hands. The plain brown card held documents, notes and pictures all related to a family. He looked up and across the broken ruins of the old gentlemen's club that had been a shell of broken glass and corpses ever since the birth of the zombie infection that consumed Blackthorn Town.
"Tell me, why should I trust you? Why should I have even come here, met you behind my fathers back?" His eyes cast back down to the file labelled 'Lovejoy'.
Across the room the hooded figure sat crouched over on the bar. "Because it's what she would have wanted".
Cal tilted his head and took a deep breath, letting it out as a sigh. He thought back to that moment at the end of the Battle of the Asylum, watching with a strange feeling of sadness as Vena, the zombie like nurse that had worked with his family only to betray them had fallen to her death. What had made it saddest was that she had meant no harm, no ill. She had just done what she was meant to do.
"She died because of me" the hooded figure said, dropping down from the bar and walking forwards. He pulled his hood back to show the face of Randolf Blackthorn, the man that had used science to resurrect Vena as part of his experiments. Making her the zombie like emotionless but very much living creature she had been at the time of her final death. What he had never expected was that she had called him father. And he had loved her.
Calcifer still hated Randolf, yet he couldn't help but pity him. "My father told her about the original file he had found. That Vena in her first life had been Mizzy's mother. That Fizzy was her sister. But you knew that all along didn't you? That's why you never hurt Mizzy in any of our confrontations. It was you wasn't it? The robed hooded figure myself and Mizzy met when we ran here after the gang that attacked the circus?"
Randolf nodded "Zero, your fathers brother had manipulated the media to blame Mizzy for the burning of the circus. I needed to keep her safe and knew your family would do that. As an added bonus she was able to work with Vena. Mother and daughter together".
Calcifer put the file under his arm and turned to walk away trying to swallow the bitter pill that Randolf, the man he had hated most had protected the women he loved. He stopped and turned back "I know that you have been spending time with Charity. She is your Grandaughter, and despite not trusting you I trust her. But if you ever hurt her, I'll..." He stopped. He could see in Randolfs eyes that he wouldn't. The maniacal monster he had become famous as was somehow lost. More human. Calcifer wasn't sure why, but he felt hope. "Your wrong about one thing Randolf. Your not responsible for Vena's death. You were responsible for her life".
Hours past as Cal checked through the contents back in the estate. One was a picture of Venus Lovejoy, looking so different to her days as Vena but still so beautiful. Another showed the two girls with their mother. A number of various medical records showed details of Venus's illness. She had died painlessly, something he knew Mizzy would be pleased to know. Another picture showed their home, in a small town a days ride away from Blackthorn and then their was a letter. His face flushed red. It was from Venus, to Mizzy.
8th of December:
Cal finished the last of his meal in the restaurant he had booked for he and Mizzy on their anniversary. The two sat laughing, kissing. They spoke about another year together. The birth of their twins and watching Charity grow to be a wonderful young girl. And then, inevitably the events of the War of the Dead arose. The discovery for Mizzy of her mother after her death. Cal placed a hand on hers and looked deep into the candles. "On that note baby, I think it's time I leave you with your Anniversary present.
The photo of her mother...
The photo of the three together...
And then the letter. She trembled, her cockiness shaken as she opened it:
"My dearest Mizzy
I know now you are too young to fully understand what is happening and where I am going. But hopefully one day you will read this and understand. I never wanted to leave you, but I'm only human. The doctors have done all they can and I'm so grateful for all they have done but my one regret is that I'll never get to see you grow. Never get to stand side by side with you as a women, and by God I know you will be a beautiful one!
Their may be dark times ahead for you. Fizzy will take this very hard and I'm afraid they may not keep you together when they find homes for you so please promise that one day you will find her?
I have one thing more to say my beautiful daughter and this is as real as I have ever been. You are the most beautiful person I've ever known. I made you, gave you life. I gave you your beautiful face. But you have made yourself who you are today. And I couldn't be prouder.
My Mizzy, I loved you with all of my heart. Tell Fizzy I loved her so much.
Know that when I finish this letter my lest breath will be with my girls on my mind, your names on my lips and love for you in my heart
Forever your mother, Venus Lovejoy".
Tears in her eyes but a smile on her lips Mizzy looked to the last item. A picture of the home of her Mother. Where she and her sister had grown. Her brow furrowed and in confusion she turned and looked out of the window. There it was. The house. Her childhood home. And infront of it stood Cal, a smile on his face and a set of keys dangling in his fingers.
"Happy Anniversary baby" he mouthed as he tilted the sign outside the door. It read 'The Lovejoy-Temp'elar residence".
