Gerloc (or Geirlaug), baptised in Rouen as Adela (or Adčle) in 912, was the daughter of Rollo, first duke of Normandy, and his wife, Poppa. She was the sister of Duke William Longsword.

War was to be averted with the Normans, or so the chivalrous Edward thought. The double promises of the French were annoying to both Norman and Englishman alike. Whilst the Duke William Longsword ruled over Normandy, there was also a promise to Edward, prince of Wessex, to take the land too. It was in part due to the distrust for the northman that the French had, and Edward′s father had a similar attitude towards them because of the Danish treachery despite giving the danegaelds that led to raid warfare to keep Wessex alive despite invasion. That was before the Kingdom of England was established from the chaos of the defense efforts of Wessex to defeat the vikings.
Edward takes a few thegn with him, and only 5,000 of the numerous members of the Royal Fyrd, which had also many powerful archers who were select and were among the first to adopt the Long Bow in England. That was only a few hundred,but the rest were many men at arms and knights.
Edward′s advisor Sir John Lundun passed a note to Edward saying, " your father is at war in Ce, and you are left without reinforcements,but I sent a messenger to make sure he knows we are securing your throne if things get violent among the Normans who live here."
Edward smiled and said, " and certainly, French knights will come to our cause too, but I have a plan to settle this dispute through judicial duel with the current Duke Longsword."
Edward approaches Rouen and stares the Duke in the eyes saying," I challenge you to duel! I have claims to this land too, and I will bring it under English control,but I will fight you with blunted weapons to not kill you, and beat you within five strikes or surrender." William Longsword agrees saying, " this will be over quick, you English dog!"
The two men dueled with excellence. Neither retreating back except for to maneuver with few steps to the flank. Both men were not allowed shields so that the stakes were higher. Part of the duel saw that Edward saw the beautiful Adele of Normandy, and got hit really hard once, and was forced to take a few steps back to recuperate. Suddenly, William takes another step and cuts in a crooked way: a very hard cut to counter through avoidance.
Edward quickly steps in, and they both got five blows at the same time causing a draw. Both men were given five minutes of break as Edward used water to recover himself so that he could think more clearly. He could not help but to keep his eyes on the beautiful Adele.
The English prince gets back up on his feet and says, " I could also marry your sister and take the country that way." William was angered, and started charging forward rashly. Edward smirked as his plan was successful,but he was also wanting to know Adele better as he dodges the frenzied blows and steps in with a cut followed by a stab, and then throws William Longsword to the ground pinning him until he was no longer frenzied.
"I won!" Edward said as he walks to Adele saying, " I am Edward of England, and you are a beautiful Norman woman. Maybe we could train some, but if you wish to raise arms against me, I understand."
